DHS’ leaders on course: From September 22 to 28, Ayo Cindi and Awande Sibisi attended a Youth Leadership course in Port Shepstone.

“It was such a wonderful experience, attending the lectures by young and old leaders telling us about their leadership journeys, how they handled their downfalls and still rose above them,” said Ayo. “Phumi, one of the lecturers, said failure is only there to fuel you. This spoke to us as we realised the importance of not giving up, because the condition of the mind becomes the condition of the heart.

“The team building activities not only taught us the importance of communication, but also finding your team’s strengths and weaknesses so you can delegate tasks accordingly. We learned, we grew… We had no idea how big of an impact this course would have on us, but I believe we’ve grown as individuals, followers and leaders. Leadership is not a title – it’s a lifestyle and in order to be a leader, you need to accept the fact that in some cases you’ll have to be a follower.

“Sinjyn, one of the mentors, taught us it’s important to lead with love. Leadership is love and a way to change people is to love them. Remember to do something because you want to do it, not because you need to.”
