Budding scientists from Sarel Cilliers have proven they have top ‘reactions’.
The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists took place from September 24 to 27, at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, and featured more than 600 learners from different regions of the country and selected learners from abroad.
Projects were set up and approved as each set of learners arrived.
The projects were then viewed by international judges, guests, sponsors and the public over the next few days, after which awards including bursaries and cash prizes were given to the top learners.
Certain sponsors, such as Eskom, Babcock and Siemens awarded special prizes.
Mariam Bibi Khan and Kameshnee Naicker from Sarel Cilliers High School received silver medals for their science project titled Sand Motor Generator.
Mariam remarked, “I feel humbled to have been a part of the International Science Fair, and associated with students that have put in hard work and effort. Coming from a small town, I have realised that the world is enormous.”
They thank God for everything and their delegation leader, teachers and regional team for making this an invaluable experience to remember.
Cricket news
Learners left early on the morning of September 27 to take part in the Eshowe High School cricket tournament.
The boys took part in five games and won all their matches against Eshowe, Richards Bay and Empangeni, before taking on Port Shepstone in the semi-final.
Unfortunately, the team lost in the final overs of the game.
William Husselman made a fantastic score with the bat while Yusafa Chenia took many wickets over the course of the tournament.
Sarel Cilliers thanked Empangeni High School for hosting a well-organised event.
