Former resident wins national award

The 44-year-old has been working for the Shoprite Group since 1995, where he began his journey as a Trainee Manager at Shoprite Ladysmith.

Former Newcastle resident, Riaz Cotwal has put the town on the map after walking away with the title of Divisional Manager of the Year by one of the country’s biggest chain stores – Shoprite.

Cotwal bagged the prestigious award at the Shoprite Group’s 2019 Super Service Awards in Cape Town recently.

Chosen from more than 147 000 employees across 15 African countries, the aim of the awards was to highlight those teams and employees who have delivered outstanding customer service.

The 44-year-old has been working for the Shoprite Group since 1995, where he began his journey as a Trainee Manager at Shoprite Ladysmith.

Climbing the corporate ladder, Cotwal took up his first position as Sales Manager and then was promoted to Branch Manager at Newcastle Shoprite Hyper, a position he held for seven years before being promoted again to Regional Manager.

In 2012, he was promoted to Trainee Deputy Divisional Manager and ultimately to Divisional Manager in KwaZulu-Natal, five years later.

Leading a team of more than 6 000 employees, Cotwal believes team work played a significant role in his achievement.

Cotwal’s colleagues described him as an example of excellence in leadership, and personally attested to his brilliance and simultaneous humility.

Congratulations, Riaz Cotwal!
