Family prepares for funeral of slain student

Friends and family have started a #JusticeForMhleli initiative to draw attention to the case.

The funeral will be held tomorrow of slain UCT student, Cebo Mhleli Mbatha. Cebo, who was affectionately known by friends as ‘Cheese Boy’, is a former Dundee High matriculant who was stabbed to death during an alleged robbery on Clifton Beach in Cape Town on Saturday evening.

The 19-year-old was a first year humanities student at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
According to reports, the stabbing incident occurred at about 9.30pm on Saturday when a group of students gathered on the beach, to celebrate before starting their end-of-year examinations.
It is believed multiple robbers then descended on the students.
SAPS officials have not confirmed any arrests related to the murder.

Cebo, who has a younger sister in Grade 10 at DHS, was described as a ‘lively child’ by his former Zulu teacher, Lindiwe Madondo.

“Nothing would have stopped him to pursue his dream. I started teaching him in Grade 9 in the creative arts class. I also taught him isiZulu until matric. He was also in the DHS poetry club. He will be dearly missed by all of us, especially the class of 2018. Our condolences to the Mbatha family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”
Cebo’s aunt, Sibongile Nxumalo, told the Courier how his sudden death had left the family shattered. “He was a very welcoming person who was the family’s comedian. He was forever making jokes and was not really a serious person. He use to love cooking and baking for the family. He was my sister’s only son. We have suffered a great loss indeed.
