Youth conference aims to turn the tide of unemployment

A youth conference was held at Sibongile Hall on September 26, with the aim of assisting those who are unemployed.

Thandi Zulu of the Siphuthando Care Centre said she planned the conference due to her concern at the rate of unemployment in the area, inviting various Government officials to speak about entry level posts at their respective offices. Guests included Dundee SAPS spokesperson, Captain V. Mbense, who spoke about common mistakes in applying for police posts.

“Most people apply incorrectly when using the Z83 form and that is the first mistake which makes their application not be considered. When applying for any job, make sure you know what you are applying for and don’t just apply for the sake of applying. Read the requirements and job specifications carefully first, so should you be hired, you know what is expected of you.”

Nondumiso Mbatha, a representative from the Department of Labour, went into great detail about drawing up curriculum vitaes (CV), preparing for job interviews and acquiring information about jobs and careers one was passionate about.

“You need to find your passion and cultivate it, by making sure you acquire the experience needed, even if it’s by volunteering.”

Ms Mbatha further elaborated on opportunities available within the Department of Labour through its Public Employment Service, where unemployed people can register on a database and be made aware of available job opportunities.
