Residents leave their mess at municipal doorstep

The municipality announced on Friday scheduled refuse removal services had been placed on hold.

Residents have taken trashing Newcastle Municipality to the next level. A small group of residents, fed up with the interruptions to service delivery which left refuse piling up since last week, have now left the mess on the municipality’s literal doorstep.

On Friday, Newcastle Municipality’s Head of Communications, Dr Dumisani Thabethe posted a notice to social media. The notice reads as follows:

“Due to unplanned industrial action, the Refuse Collection service is currently on hold. Residents are kindly requested to put their plastic bags back in their yards and take them out again on the scheduled day next week. This applies to residents whose collections [sic] days are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.”

The group of residents arrived at the municipal tower blocks this morning, to drop off refuse bags in the elevated parking. Not satisfied this would have the desired impact, they then moved the bags to create a barricade in front of the building’s main entrance.
