Watch: Police vehicle crashes after suspect breaks free and yanks steering wheel

Both suspects were re-arrested by police at the scene of the crash

A police vehicle crashed last night (September 26) in Queen Street while transporting two suspects to the police station. It is believed that one of the suspects managed to break free from his handcuffs while the officer was driving. A fight ensued, with the suspect yanking the steering wheel.

This caused the Nissan Hardbody to veer off the road, crashing into the pavement as well as the wall of a food outlet situated in Queen Street.

Police, the Ladysmith K9 Unit, emergency personnel and towing services responded to the scene.

Both suspects were re-arrested at the scene of the crash.

The police officers and suspects were treated on scene before being taken to hospital for further medical treatment.

Many passersby stopped to see what was going on.
