Search continues for missing UFS student

South African Police Service (SAPS) Warrant Officer Mopharine from Phuthaditjhaba said the police are continuing the search:

The desperate search continues for University of Free State (UFS) student, 21-year-old Amkelani Thwala, who hails from Osizweni.

It’s been a dreadful three weeks for the Thwala family, as they constantly wait to hear about their child, who has been missing since September 6.

Amkelani is reported to have been hiking from QwaQwa (Free State) to Newcastle.

His older brother, Dumisa Thwala said the family still hasn’t heard anything about Amkelani’s whereabouts:

“We are still searching for my brother and we have not heard anything from the police either. It’s a traumatic experience and we don’t know if he’s safe or not.”

South African Police Service (SAPS) Warrant Officer Mopharine from Phuthaditjhaba said the police are continuing the search:

“We have been searching tirelessly for the UFS student. We have also followed leads that have been brought forward. One lead took us to Pietermaritzburg, where someone said they might have seen someone that looks likes Amkelani. Unfortunately we didn’t find him at the specified area. Another lead was in Khayalanyoni, where some students also headed with police officials. Police entered the place, spoke to the owner but didn’t find anything. Students ended up burning the place because of an apparent source who said Amkelani was being kept there. It is unfortunate what happened – that the students ended burning down someone’s house. We however, do continue the search.”

The UFS Protection Services continues to work closely with the SAPS to establish Amkelani’s whereabouts.
