Stock thieves penned in by SAPS

"Stock theft syndicates are getting caught and we are trying by all means to oppose their bail."

The Glencoe Stock Theft Unit has successfully recovered stolen livestock and returned the animals to their rightful owners.

Suspects – Muziwamandla Zulu and Phakamani Dube – appeared for a bail application at the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court in connection with the theft of 24 cows belonging to a Mr Schroeder of Glencoe. Bail was denied pending further investigations.
It is believed the suspects entered the property through a broken section of fence.

Zulu and Dube both have pending cases, to be heard in the Dundee Regional Court in October, and Zulu was out on bail in relation to other stock theft cases. Both suspects are currently in custody at Ladysmith Correctional Services. Eight of the cows are still missing.

Investigating Officer Kunene, from the Glencoe Stock Theft Unit, explained there had been an increase in livestock theft cases in the Dundee and Glencoe areas.

Operations Manager for the unit, Capt. Amanda Bezuidenhout added, “Stock theft syndicates are getting caught and we are trying by all means to oppose their bail. We would like to plead with the community to be more vigilant and come forward with any information which might help the unit. They can come forward before the actual crime or after the stock has been stolen, and we will investigate further.”

She said there was an informant reward offered for those who came forward with reliable information.
