Tyres burn as Dannhauser residents protest

The Fire Brigade and members of the Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit have been deployed in response.

Dannhauser residents have taken to the streets this morning, barricading the Durnacol and Newcastle entrances with burning tyres.

The Fire Brigade reacted swiftly to remove the tyres and members of the SAPS Public Order Policing Unit are to be deployed. Hundreds of residents, many from the outlying areas of the municipal boundary, are expected to gather to voice their dissatisfaction with the municipality.

All the shops in the town have remained closed.

A spokesman for the organising committee – the Dannhauser Community Development Forum –  said protesters will hand over a memorandum to a representative from CoGTA (Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs), highlighting issues such as ‘the state of the town, service delivery and rampant corruption, to name a few’.

People are currently gathering at Dannhauser Secondary School, with buses and taxis transporting residents to the meeting point before the march on the municipality gets underway.

While organisers have stressed this is a peaceful march, they have promised the town would be ‘shut down as it was in Newcastle’ should they receive no joy from the municipality.
