Community hall damaged as Dannhauser protests continue

The crowd turned to anger when they realised no senior managers from the municipality would accept their memorandum.

What started as a service delivery protest in Dannhauser has turned violent, with protesters venting their anger on the recently-opened community hall in South Park.

Several windows were smashed after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as the crowd started throwing stones at what appeared to be the vacated Dannhauser Municipal offices.

One man was hit in the face by a rubber bullet and others were overcome by tear gas.  Police have made several arrests on charges of public violence.

The crowd turned to anger when they realised no senior managers from the municipality were available to accept their memorandum, even though protesters claimed the municipality knew about their intentions as they had ‘sought permission to march’.

A memorandum was later handed over to Suzie van der Westhuizen, a representative of KZN CoGTA (Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs). In this memorandum, residents’ grievances were listed as: lack of service delivery in the town, rampant corruption et al.

CoGTA has promised to give feedback to the community by October 2.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available..
