Armed gang opens fire on SAPS van during robbery

SAPS members then gave chase to the fleeing criminals but the gang managed to evade arrest.

Three armed men held staff at the Shell Garage in Glencoe at gunpoint on Thursday evening, and fired shots at a passing SAPS patrol van.

Police officials said the armed robbers arrived at the filling station at about 9.30pm. They entered the store and jumped over counter, putting staff in their sights before making off with cash and cigarettes. A Glencoe SAPS van passed the garage while the men were inside the shop, and came under fire. Fortunately, none of the officials were injured.

SAPS members then gave chase to the fleeing criminals but the gang managed to evade arrest. It is not yet clear if they were on foot or used a getaway car. Linda Els, owner of Glencoe Motors Shell Garage, said their phone ‘had not stopped ringing’ with residents showing their support and concern.

“None of our staff were injured – but are of course traumatised. Thanks to everyone who called to show their concern,” said Mrs Els.

An official investigation into the incident has commenced.
