Osizweni family prays for safe return of their missing son

The UFS Protection Services is working closely with the South African Police Service to establish Amkelani’s whereabouts.

University of Free State (UFS) student, 21-year-old Amkelani Thwala, who is from Osizweni, has been missing since September 6.

Amkelani is reported to have been hiking from QwaQwa (Free State) to Newcastle, and his older brother, Dumisa Thwala confirmed this:

“Amkelani left QwaQwa saying he was going to hike for transport to take him home to Newcastle for the weekend. When he left it was around 5.25pm. We expected him to be home but he never arrived, until the Sunday he was supposed to come back to school at UFS. On the Monday, September 9, we went to the police station in QwaQwa but we weren’t assisted. We then forced to be helped on Tuesday, that’s only when we were taken seriously. They then assigned an officer to work on the case, but we still haven’t heard anything. It is traumatising to think every day what could have happened to him. Every day we go out looking for him, praying we will hear good news but nothing.”

Students at UFS disrupted classes last week, demanding the campus takes the missing case of their fellow student seriously.

It is reported students have refused for any classes to take place at the campus until its management did something about Amkelani’s disappearance.

The UFS Protection Services is working closely with the South African Police Service to establish Amkelani’s whereabouts.

If you have any information to assist with the search, please contact Warrant Officer Zulu on 076 589 8565 or the university’s Protection Services on the Qwaqwa Campus at 058 718 5460/5175/5360.
