Thinking F.A.S.T can save a stroke victim

Visit the Newcastle Mall on September 19 to take your free health test, from 9am to 3pm.

Heart disease and strokes can affect anyone, yet most people cannot identify the signs of a stroke.

Mediclinic and ER24 are equipped with the expertise to treat and manage stroke patients to ensure optimal outcomes – and you can help.

“Stroke patients need time,” said Dr Melanie Stander, Emergency Medicine Manager: Mediclinic Southern Africa. “You can give them that by knowing what a stroke looks like, and calling for immediate emergency assistance.”

Remember the acronym F.A.S.T:

F – Does one side of the face droop? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided?

A – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

T – Time to act. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms are temporary, call ER24 to get them to a hospital immediately.

“Another crucial factor is prevention. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, lack of regular exercise – these are all lifestyle factors that could eventually lead to a stroke,” explained Dr Stander.

So this September, Mediclinic invites you to take advantage of free blood pressure and cholesterol tests at one of its participating hospitals and to share the message on maintaining a healthy heart with friends and family. Also visit Newcastle Mall on September 19 to take your free health test, between 9am and 3pm.
