Theft accused beaten by angry mob

Before SAPS arrived at the scene, the mob picked up the man and carried him across the street.

A man was assaulted on Victoria Street this afternoon, near the Princess Magogo building.

Witnesses said it appeared as if a group of men, some of whom were reportedly seen drinking alcohol in public, accused the man of stealing from them and began hitting him.

Witnesses added that once the assault began, the man collapsed onto the pavement while his accusers continued to shout at him. Two women attempted to assist the victim but were chased away by the angry mob.

SAPS and ambulance services were contacted. Before officials could arrive at the scene however, the mob picked up the theft accused and carried him across the street and continued to strike him.

Both SAPS and ambulance services then arrived at the scene. Police officials later confirmed one man had been arrested in connection with the assault incident.

Allegations that the man was a foreign national could not be confirmed.
