Johan Badenhorst and his Voetspore team have spent the past two days in Northern KZN, passing through Dundee en route to the Spioenkop battlefield outside Ladysmith. The team camped out last night at Spioenkop Dam.

The Battle of Spioenkop (Spion Kop) on January 24, 1900, was one of the bloodiest of the Anglo Boer War. The trenches in which many of the British troops fell to unrelenting Boer firepower, has been dubbed the ‘Acre of Massacre’.  Over 300 Brithsh soldiers were killed, while Boer casualties numbered around 58.

The Courier’s Terry Worley and Dundee-based tour guide, Johann Hamman were fortunate to accompany the Voetspore team  on this leg of its three-month tour around South Africa. The programme is televised on SABC 2, at 7pm on Monday evenings.

The team is headed to Dingaanstadt today and will be in Blood River tomorrow, before heading through Vryheid to Kosi Bay. The tour ends on October 11 in the far north expanses of the Kalahari Desert.

Johan commented the battlefields of NKZN held a great fascination for he and his team, and understanding the history of the country helped one understand present-day circumstances. Watch Voetspore on September 23 to see the documentary footage captured in NKZN.
