More than a million rand has been raised for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CanSA) that enables outreach and treatment projects. This incredible feat is thanks to the generous support of Africa’s only 24-hour Relay for Life that took place at the Forderville Primary School athletic stadium over the weekend.

Hundreds of people united for the 11th annual Relay for Life on Saturday and Sunday, September 7 and 8, from 10am. At the end of an exhilarating and exhausting 24 hours, a cheque for R110,000 was handed over to CanSA, as well as R10,000 to the Estcourt Hospice Association.

Event chairperson Anil Sookraj lauded the efforts of each relay participant, sponsor and the committed Cancer Support Group.

“There is a lot of hard work that goes into planning an event like this and we can proudly say that there were no unpleasant incidents reported. Thank you to everyone who made this 11th Relay for Life possible,” said Mr Sookraj at the presentation ceremony on Sunday morning.

CanSA representative Heidi Jansen enthused about the community spirit of perseverance from the “relayers” who went the distance.

“I will be back next year for another 24-hour relay,” she said.

Several accolades were presented to teams and individuals before tired but satisfied “relayers” headed home to catch up on some sleep.
