Not everyone welcomed the long-overdue tree felling programme, read why here

While residents welcomed the municipality’s recent, long-overdue tree felling programme, there has been a point of concern.

Visibly irritated, Alet Gericke remarked to an Estcourt News reporter that Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality “does not know what it is doing”.

She was referring to the recent tree felling in Drakensview.  Mrs Gericke went on to explain that staff cut off the protruding branches, leave them at the side of the road and they remain there for days … and in some cases weeks.

In addition, in some areas where gutters have been cleaned, the debris also lies in a heap on the sidewalk. Mrs Gericke’s concerns were conveyed to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize responded on Monday, assuring residents like Mrs Gericke that the collection of branches ‘is being attended to’. Mr Mkhize further explained that the clearing of illegal dumping sites in residential areas like Papkuilsfontein, Colita and Wembezi is currently underway.

“A plea to all ratepayers is to report the culprits who are dumping in your area so that appropriate action can be taken against them,” added Mr Mkhize.
