School officially opens new cricket nets

The facilities consist of 4 cement pitches, with a synthetic surface, as well as 2 turf nets

The official opening of the new cricket nets at Monument Primary School was held on Tuesday, August 13, at the school grounds.

This project was undertaken to increase the capacity of training facilities to accommodate more learners who want to play cricket at the school. Mr Naveen Ramnarain, also known as “Coach”, was the project leader.

The facilities consist of four cement pitches, with a synthetic surface, as well as two turf nets.

All the preparation, planting of grass, etc, was done by Coach and the school’s grounds staff. The facilities will be used to prepare the learners to play on all surfaces during the cricket season.

The opening of the cricket nets was attended by the School Governing Body, first team players and members of staff.

During the opening, school principal Mr Rich quoted Sachin Tendulkar in saying, “All classrooms and learners must be used, as well as all grounds, not for cows to graze on, but for cricket.”

“These facilities provide our learners with the opportunity to learn and practice,” added Mr Rich.

School Governing Body chairman Mr Julius Beukes thanked all involved in making these facilities a reality. He motivated the learners to be proud of their facilities and make good use of them.

School Governing Body vice-chairman Mr Xolani Hlatshwayo did the honours of cutting the ribbon. After the ceremony, a Hi Tea was held and the learners used this time to try out their new nets.
