Top Lasec learners awarded bursaries

The learners were presented with their bursaries by DWS officials at a special ceremony at the school

Ladysmith Secondary (Lasec) learners Naledi Mbatha and Mishka Harilal were recently presented with bursaries from the Department of Water Affairs & Sanitation (DWS) and the Aqua Enduro Competition.

A special ceremony, attended by DWS officials, was held at the school.

The department identifies high-fliers in Science and Mathematics at school level. The learners then undergo an intensive training programme at their school by an educator mentor, who was Mr S Rajkoomar.

Learners from all schools then participate at provincial level. The learners from Lasec were selected to represent KwaZuluNatal at the national competition.

Both Naledi and Mishka excelled in all aspects pertaining to water conservation, water harvesting and water treatment. They also excelled in their leadership skills and problem solving.

Aqua Enduro is a DWS initiative to ensure the sustainability of our water resources for the future.

The learners will now be able to study at a university of their choice in some career related to the water sector. The bursary covers all university expenses, as well as a living allowance.

After graduating, they will be absorbed into the DWS, where they will play a role in ensuring that all the people of South Africa have access to safe and clean drinking water.

Well done, Naledi and Mishka! You have brought honour to your school, the community of Ladysmith and the province as a whole.
