Frankie Horne speaks positivity at Sarel Cilliers

Sarel Cilliers High was honoured to have former South African Rugby Sevens player, Frankie Horne as the guest speaker at last Thursday’s sports and culture prize-giving. Having put the school sevens team through its paces a day before the ceremony, Frankie received a hero’s welcome when he took to the stage.

Being from a small town himself (from Wellington in the the Western Cape), Frankie said he could relate to the learners at Sarel Cilliers in Glencoe: “Sport opened up my world and I was able to travel around the world, representing the SA Sevens Team from 2007 to 2017. It was an honour. One must always appreciate the small things in life because there is always some one worse off than you.”

Dave van der Westhuizen, Sarel’s sports master, thanked Frankie for taking time out of his new career in sport management to travel to Glencoe. He also thanked Orange Grove for its continued support of the school.

Sarel juskei team wins at KZN Indigenous Games

The annual KwaZulu-Natal Indigenous Games took place from August 16 to 18 in Ladysmith. The u-18 jukskei boys team from Sarel Cilliers was chosen to represent uMzinyathi in jukskei and it triumphed over the other districts to take first place. It is a fantastic achievement and was many years in the making.

Following the announcement of the winner, the school paid tribute to coach, Leon Lombard for his dedication. Olwethu Siyaya has been selected for the KZN team which will take part in the National Indigenous Games in Limpopo in September.

Annual KZN equestrian tent pegging

Zander Steyn took part in the annual KZN Tent Pegging Champs. He did not have a great day and missed the A team by just one point, but did qualify for the KZN B team. Sarel Cilliers is very proud of him.

Cricket

On August 24, Sarel Cilliers’ first team cricket played against Newcastle High School in a 50 over match. Sarel scored 282 all out, with top scorers Hanro (105), Willem (34) and Kim (30). In reply, NHS was 86 all out, with Sarel’s top bowlers Chenia (four wickets), Saalih (two wickets), Jarren (two wickets) and Willem (two wickets).
