Donate blood, but not if you have the flu

Every unit of blood can save a minimum of 3 lives, as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets

The Ladysmith Blood Donor Clinic is appealing to the community to please come forward and donate blood to help alleviate the blood crisis they are currently facing.

A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks. Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives, as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

Minthra Omapershad tells us that you have to be healthy to donate. If you have the flu, unfortunately you cannot donate to avoid viruses in the blood. If you are a blood donor, then you will know that Minthra is a dedicated and helpful employee of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and you can find her at the Ladysmith Blood Donor Clinic, San Marco Centre.

She is hoping that you come in to donate your life-saving blood. Remember that your donation saves lives, so donate and make a difference in somebody’s life today.
