Team helps children realise R65K dream

LAL’s Susan Pitout said: “I am grateful for each and every person who made an impact on the lives of our children at Môrester.”

It was in the year 2013,when friends, who were training for a 55 kilometre race, spoke about the amount of effort it took.

They then had the epiphany of rather doing the race for a worthy cause, and this was how Leaving a Legacy was born.

Although the 25th Vlam Panelbeaters Memel to Newcastle Walk has come and gone, spirits among Leaving a Legacy members are still running high and the team has much to celebrate.

In just 11 weeks, the Leaving a Legacy team has raised more than R65 000 for the children at Môrester Child and Youth Care Centre.

With the campaign #whenfriendsbecomefamily, the community showed its support for the children of the home.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the team’s vision to improve the lives of the young, old, needy and destitute charity organisation in Newcastle remains its ultimate goal and mission.

This year, its largest fundraising component was through generous pledges from the community, businesses and individuals, who donated a total of R 42 330 to date. Bathroom renovations at the home, plus clothing, food and other donations made up a total of R 22 754.

LAL’s Susan Pitout said: “I am grateful for each and every person who made an impact on the lives of our children at Môrester.”

Business owners, individuals and schools rallied and challenged each other to better pledges. Ferrum High School was one of the schools which came to the party and accepted the challenge.

Aiden Pietersen, a Grade 12 Ferrum learner, took part in the 50km, with the staff and learners backing him up with pledges and support all in the name of charity.

Since its inception in 2013, Leaving a Legacy has raised funds for the SPCA, La Gratitude Old Age Home, St Martin’s Village, Esperanza Special Needs School and now Môrester CYCC.

“Leaving a Legacy strives to leave a positive imprint on Newcastle. We are truly creating a legacy of giving in our community,” concluded Pitout.
