Young star tunes her talents as a young violinist

Maka recently performed for the masses at the National Suzuki Concert, which was held at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg on August 4.

Musical prodigy, Maka Govere is plucking heartstrings with her violin skills.

The 14-year-old star, who hails from Newcastle, is making waves as she masters the art of playing the violin as a learner at Wykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg.

Maka recently performed for the masses at the National Suzuki Concert, which was held at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg on August 4.

The Suzuki Association of South Africa was founded in 2000, with the aim of making music education available to all children.

Maka said it’s been a few years playing the violin:

“In 2015, I took up the violin as a second instrument, but loved it so much that it quickly became my primary instrument. It’s a beautiful instrument to play. I have found the violin has created a lot more discipline in me and better focus.I just have to sacrifice other things to make sure that I can balance academics and my art, because I play both the piano and violin.”

She said she was excited to play in Johannesburg.

“Playing at the Suzuki Concert was really amazing. I got to meet other children with similar passion and talent. It was good to have my talent shared by others.”

She added that if she’s not excelling at school, she tries to relax.

“I like watching YouTube videos, Disney movies and series, when I’m resting my mind.”

Maka added she was grateful to her family for the support: “I am motivated when my family encourages and supports me. I wouldn’t be able to do it without their consistent support. I love my family.”

Maka’s mother, Heather Govere said it has been a joy watching her daughter soar in the arts:

“Initially, it used to make me cry tears of joy to think my child is blessed with such talent. My husband and I are truly blessed to have three children with amazing gifts. I am sure to make her take personal responsibility for what she wants and we support her.

“She is determined, gifted and talented. Maka knows what she wants out of life and she works consistently hard to attain that. She has an amazing sense of humour and loves playing with babies where ever she sees them. My only hope for her is that she uses her God given talents responsibly and lives to the full. The world is her oyster.”

Maka said she would love to one day see herself playing on all the musical stages of the world.
