Veld fires run wild in Ladysmith

Residents are urged to report veld fires as soon as they break out, so that firefighters can respond quickly and stop the blaze from spreading

The Ladysmith Fire Department has had its hands full recently, with firefighters attending to about 16 veld fires in the past month.

A fire official commented that this high number is due to the drier season with its strong winds and high temperatures, leading to veld fires on farmlands.

Communities therefore need to be reminded of precautionary measures when using potentially dangerous equipment, and are also encouraged to carry out fire breaks around their homes.

A veld fire recently ran wild in the Farquhar Road area. Residents panicked at the possibility of their homes and properties burning to ashes, and children watched in horror as the fire swept through the open area nearby. Fortunately, no houses were destroyed and no injuries reported.

The Ladysmith Fire Department urges people to report veld fires as soon as they break out, so that firefighters can respond quickly and stop the blaze from spreading.
