Sarel learners act as judge and jury

The case required an understanding of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996 and the Bill of Rights.

Sarel Cilliers learners, Thukela Jaji and Thobeka Khoza were selected – on basis of an essay submission – to represent the uMzinyathi District at the KwaZulu-Natal regional finals of the Moot Court competition, held in Durban.

After two days of intensive training by lawyers from the Human Rights Commission and Legal Aid, as well as lecturers from the UKZN Legal Department, the learners presented for the applicant and the respondent in a hypothetical legal case, in front of practicing magistrates of the Durban Magistrates Court, who acted as justices of the Constitutional Court.

The case required an understanding of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996 and the Bill of Rights. Learners were also required to cite case law to support their arguments.

Congratulations to Thukela and Thobeka for taking on such a demanding and challenging brief and for making their school proud. They were awarded a trophy from uMzinyathi for making it to district level and received a second trophy in Durban, for representing a school which was a first time participant in the completion.

The school would like to thank the Principal of Sarel Cilliers for his valid insight and support in this endeavour, and uMzinyathi Department of Education officials, Mpume Mchunu and Thembi, who mentored and supported the team during training and competition.

Girls rugby: On August 1, two of Sarel Cilliers’ rugby girls, Owethu Zulu and Nothobejo Mthupha went to the Eastern Cape to participate in the Youth Training Centre Competition. The learners would like to thank Mr van Staden and Mr Dube for giving them the opportunity to attend.

Tennis scores: Sarel Cilliers beat Vryheid High School six-five, and beat Dundee High School nine-three.

Cricket: It was a busy weekend for the first cricket team. It went to the Pongola Cricket Festival and played four matches. In the first match, Sarel faced DHS and were beaten. The local team had a much better game on the Friday and made 217 runs, with Willem Husselman batting brilliantly and scoring 81 runs, In reply, Dundee made 83 in its 20 overs.

On the Saturday morning, it was a tough match against Ferrum High School and a close encounter. Sarel made 123 to Ferrum’s 76. In its third match, Sarel bowled Pongola Academy out for 84 runs and achieved this score in 11 overs. In the final match (and the only 10-over game) against VHS, the team had to make 69 to win, but managed only to score 52.

“Well done, boys, on a overall excellent performance. We want to wish them everything of the best with the match against Newcastle High School next Saturday.
