SAPS shuts down 112 illegal liquor outlets

Owners of unlicensed liquor outlets were also arrested and charged for transgressing the laws.

Police officers in KZN have intensified operations to clamp down on mushrooming illegal liquor outlets in the province.

A weekend operation across the province, from Friday to Sunday (August 16-18) last week, resulted in the closure of 112 unlicensed liquor outlets. The same number of owners were arrested for selling liquor without a license.

“During these operations, police also conducted inspections on licensed premises to check if they are complying with conditions imposed on their licenses. Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the contributors to serious crimes and leads to other social ills that occur in communities, ” said SAPS provincial spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

A large quantity of alcohol was seized by police as evidence. Col Mbhele said these kind of operations focused on the illegal sale of alcohol, due to its close links with crime. Weekend operations have been stepped up by SAPS in the province, as it is reportedly over these days the most serious crimes in KZN occur.

“Police are focusing on increased roadblocks, stop and searches, suspect raids and other operations in high crime areas,” concluded Col Mbhele.
