Provincial commissioner applauds police officers for their resilience during confrontation with heavily armed gang

A long-awaited breakthrough may have been come in the case of murdered Estcourt Stock Theft Unit member Constable Nkosinathi Khumalo.

The 35-year-old was shot and killed in Alexandra Street on May 11.
His body was discarded on the side of the road and the suspects made a getaway in his white VW Polo.
The vehicle was recovered the following day in Nhlawe, Weenen after a shoot-out between police and the occupants on the property.

Yesterday (August 17) a team from the South African Police Service (SAPS) was conducting multi-disciplinary operations in Nhlawe when they were confronted by a heavily armed gang.

“The men resisted attempts to arrest them and a shoot-out ensued. A 28-year-old suspect was fatally wounded during the exchange of gun fire whilst a 21-year-old suspect was placed under arrest. Police seized two AK 47 rifles, a R5 rifle, an air gun and 101 rounds of ammunition at the scene,” explains police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker.

During the initial investigation phase, police have been led to believe that the arrested suspect is linked to Constable Khumalo’s murder. The arrested suspect will appear at the Weenen Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The Provincial Commissioner for Kwazulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula hailed the breakthrough into the killing of Constable Khumalo.

“The arrest and recovery of these firearms are evident that police officers in this province are closing in on criminal gangs who commit serious crimes in the false belief that they can evade law enforcement. These types of operations are going to be intensified so that we break this vicious cycle of serious and violent crimes in KZN,” said Lieutenant General Jula.
