Rev Ruth dedicated her life to improving the quality of life of the less fortunate, fought against cancer, and was a prayer warrior in the Saint Matthew’s Anglican Church.

The 69-year-old was set to celebrate her 70th birthday on August 20. Despite her illness, Rev Ruth was an active participant in the CANSA Relay for Life (RFL) and also spent many years serving with the Estcourt Rotary Club.

“Ruth joined the Rotary Club of Estcourt in May 2015. She was an enthusiastic, active Rotarian, who gave a lot of her time and energy to community projects,” shared club member, Louis Piovesan.

Due to failing health however, Rev Ruth had to give up her active membership as a Rotarian, but was acknowledged for her efforts with an Honorary Membership by the local club. She was also an Administrator at the Estcourt Hospice Association between 2002 and 2014.

Hospice Chief Executive Officer, Rena Licen said of her: “She was an integral part of the Hospice team for 12 years. Everyone in the community knew her well for her caring, loving nature. Heaven has gained another angel. We will miss her dearly and convey our sincere condolences to her family and friends.”

CANSA RFL chairperson, Anil Sookraj added, “She was a very dedicated relayer, she supported us all the years while still fit. She gave hope to many survivors.”

Rev Ruth is said to have influenced many community members over the years and will be especially remembered for her dedication, caring nature and hard work. Her Colita neighbour, Ms Mabaso testified to this fact.

“We were neighbours from 1997; I feel like I have lost a family member. My heart is broken. She was so good, and even when not well, she showed strength and would take walks in her yard and greet those passing by. I called her Mamfundisi and always told her ‘when I die, you will conduct my service’. I remember when my late husband was not well, she came home to pray for him, even while she herself was not well.”

In remembrance of Rev Ruth’s selfless calling, Father Madoda Khumalo called on congregants to work beyond the church building as his late colleague had done.

“Thank you for your time served in priesthood; thank you for serving the community on all different platforms,” he said as a tribute to her.

Rev Ruth was ordained in May 2011 and regularly took communion to the sick at Shepstone Place Home for the Aged, when her health allowed her to.

A family member confirmed Rev Ruth passed away on the night of August 7, and her funeral was held this past weekend at the St Matthew’s Anglican Church, after which a funeral group proceeded to the Ladysmith Crematorium for the final rites.

The community is saddened but agree Rev Ruth has left an incredible mark on society, for which locals are deeply indebted.
