Co-accused with former Mayor shot dead in Estcourt

It is reported that he died in a hail of bullets

Estcourt IFP Councillor, Mthembeni Majola, was gunned down in the town last night. Councillor Majola was a co-accused in the conspiracy to commit murder trial, along with former Endumeni Mayor, Richard Mbatha, and alleged hitman, Xolani Makhathini.

While details about the shooting are still sketchy,  the Estcourt News reported that Councillor Majola, who was bound to a wheelchair, was shot dead and two others injured in the vicinity of the Estcourt Hospital, near the R103 route, at about 8pm on Friday night.

Local police and traffic officers responded to the scene.

A senior official in the regional IFP structure confirmed the death of Councillor Majola. The IFP’s Provincial leadership is set to visit Mr Majola’s residence to offer their condolences later today.

Councillor Majola, Richard Mbatha and Xolani Makhathini were arrested in May 2018 on charges of plotting to kill former Endumeni Speaker and fellow IFP Councillor, Bongiwe Mbatha-Makhathini. The case has been postponed to November.
