The situation is heating up at Vaalkrans Coal Mine near Vryheid where a truck was set on fire by workers protesting the non-payment of their salaries.
The 350 workers have been on strike since Thursday. They say their protest was peaceful but when the Dundee-based employer failed to meet with workers, a truck was set on fire this morning.
“We spent the entire day waiting at the gates for management to arrive and let us know what was going on, but no one ever did. Instead, the police were sent over to tell us to disperse. We were told the money would reflect in our accounts by last night but that has not happened until now,” said one anonymous employee.
Employees families have turned to social media to vent their anger of not being able to buy or pay school fees.
