Multi-talented young cast eager to perform at the Janmashtami

The children have been hard at work, perfecting their lines and getting into character

The final touches are being put on costumes, and lines are being memorised for the play entitled ‘Durvasa Muni’, which will be staged at the Shri Krishna Janmashtami.

This annual event that is hosted around the world by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna.

In Estcourt, the Janmashtami celebration (to be held on August 17) has become a highlight on the social calendar and the Iskcon Estcourt team is making sure it does not disappoint.

Last Friday evening, the young cast of actors donned their full costumes for a dress rehearsal. The play follows the life of a great Sage who seeks to find the purpose of life.

Shane Mohamed, who is the script writer, said that the play bears relevance in today’s society.

“It is deeply spiritual and points out the facets in society that many people are battling with, like status, self-esteem and position,” explained Mr Mohamed. He described the young actors as “multi-talented” and said they were excited about taking to the stage in front of dozens of people on August 17.

“The children have been practicing for about two months and have developed a lot; they are easing into character nicely,” he added.

Yegasha Naidoo from Iskcon Estcourt recalled how, more than 20 years ago, the local group would rely on talent from other towns to perform at the Janmashtami, but now had its own talented pool of devotees.

“Estcourt has lots of talent and over the years, we have grown in confidence,” said Mr Naidoo.

Be sure to be part of the Shri Krishna Janmashtami at the Swami Sahajananda Community Centre, starting at 3pm.
