Watch: Residents don’t want to live in Colenso anymore

One of the town's problems is illegal dumping, with many people depositing their rubbish anywhere and everywhere

“I do not want to live in Colenso anymore,” says Cora Parson. Many residents have complained to the municipality about the sad state of Colenso, but nothing seems to be done about it. From dumping to the poor condition of the roads, streetlights left on day and night, and sewage woes, these are the ongoing problems residents are faced with.

“We have phoned the municipality on numerous occasions to fix our roads, but in vain,” says Mrs Parson. Fellow Colenso resident Mrs Elize Botha says that motorists cannot use the roads without damaging their vehicles, as the roads are not tarred and are full of holes.

Mrs Botha further complains that many areas in Colenso are left without streetlights. “Some of the streetlight wires are bare and hanging, which is so dangerous for the children,” concurs Mrs Parson.

Another ongoing problem is illegal dumping, with many people depositing their rubbish anywhere and everywhere. This makes the area extremely untidy, especially on windy days when litter is whipped up and down roads, and gets stuck in fences. Not only that, but the rotten smell is unbearable on hot days.

Mrs Botha sums up the situation by saying, “We need to be happy to live in our town. Right now, it is a nightmare to live here.”
