Residents of the old age home, some committee members, former committee members, staff and Ward 10 Councillor Edith Lite were in attendance, and were later joined by Councillor Mlotshwa who represented the municipality’s legal department.

“The purpose of us meeting is to find a way forward despite what had happened at the home. Let us put the functionality of the home first and when you are given the opportunity to talk; address me and vent to me,” explained Councillor Lite.

After a quick round of introductions, the minutes of the previous meeting were read out aloud.

Committee member Brain Greaves said: “As far as I am aware this is the first time any committee members, besides Chris Branken, are invited to a meeting. This is one big minefield and it has the potential to degenerate into a slaying match. We are here to minimise the stress at the home and not here for ‘I said, you said’. I have my own views about Debbie Potgieter. We have to move forward not to add weight to this.”

Mr Greaves went on to clarify a point mentioned in the previous minutes stating that, chairperson Sheryl Lane does not pay rent to reside at the home.’ He emphasised that she pays rent and that she increased her own rent, also adding that the committee needs support.

Former Shepstone Place committee member, Ian Armstrong responded: “The trust document has not been adhered to. The first step to correct this is the committee must resign. No one can serve for longer three years; we need a new committee”

Jenny Wreford asked if a new committee will know about the home’s welfare and diet. After Councillor Lite called for order, she reminded everyone present that issues need to be addressed to improve the situation.

She went on to read the deed of trust and emphasised the clauses she felt were not being adhered to. A stir was created by the committee members who did not have those documents issued to them prior to the meeting.

A follow-up meeting was held on Tuesday.
