Farmer dismayed at slaughter of his cattle

"If you multiply seven by R7 000 a head, then you can work out what kind of financial implications this has on a farmer," explained Jansen van Rensburg. "As farmers, we are the last to be paid."

Gluckstadt cattle farmer, Hannes Jansen van Rensburg has urged farmers to form good relationships with their staff.

“Try to do your utmost, to get your relationships with your workers right,” he implored.

His impassioned plea follows his receiving a call from the spouse of one of his employees last Thursday morning, alerting him that his cattle were being slaughtered at the roadside by a group of cattle rustlers.

A total of seven of his herd were affected by this incident.

One of the cattle was killed in the kraal.

This includes the two found dead in the kraal, where the animals are kept at night, two more which were slaughtered before the thieves were scared off, and another three which are still missing.

“If you multiply seven by R7 000 a head, then you can work out what kind of financial implications this has on a farmer,” explained Jansen van Rensburg. “As farmers, we are the last to be paid.”

He added this was not the first time this month his cattle had been targeted.

Farm workers under the employ of Hannes Jansen van Rensburg made a grim discovery last Thursday morning.

On July 5, he reported another case of cattle theft to the police, and this is the second time in only a month he has fallen victim to what has been called ‘rampant cattle theft’, which has left local farmers at the mercy of criminals.
SAPS officials were not available for response at the time of going to print.
