Bittersweet final bazaar for NG Kerk Suid

Pastor Heinrich Theunissen said hosting the bazaar was a bittersweet experience for him.

Laughter and conversation filled the halls and grounds of the NG Kerk Newcastle Suid on Friday afternoon, as members of the congregation gathered in support of the church’s last bazaar.

More than half a century after the church opened its doors for worship in Arbor Park, the NG Kerk is preparing to sell the premises, as escalating costs and dwindling membership makes it unfeasible to continue operating.

Pastor Heinrich Theunissen said hosting the bazaar was a bittersweet experience for him.

On the one hand, the funds raised from the well-supported event would assist the church with its outreach programs, which include financial support to Christian Social Services and donations in kind to Home Meah.

On the other hand, Pastor Theunissen reflected that three generations of memories, births that were celebrated, marriages that were observed and the lives of lost loved ones honoured at the church, made his heart sore at the thought of leaving.

“I have led this congregation for 21 years. The church is my life and my wife’s life.

“We have made memories here that you can’t recreate, and we have formed close relationships with the people who have joined us over the years. It makes me feel better to know that even though we are leaving the premises behind, the 350 members of my congregation and the spirit of the church will go with me,” said Pastor Theunissen.

“It is only the building we are leaving behind.”

He explained the NG Kerk Newcastle Suid would be merging with the NG Kerk Bergsig in Hutten Heights.

“With our combined members, resources and efforts, we will be able to have an even greater impact in the community,” added Pastor Theunissen.

The last church service at the NG Kerk Newcastle Suid will take place on November 24.
