Protesters meet with municipality under police guard

Sources say the police fired rubber bullets and deployed tear gas earlier in the morning.

Journalists are at the scene of the protest in KwaMathukuza, and say there are about 1 000 people still blocking the road.

Residents are demanding services and calling on the Ward Councillor to address their concerns. A protester explained residents were standing together, to protest about unaffordable electricity and water tariffs.

One of the items used to block the road was apparently a boat. The road is likely to be closed for the next few hours, with tyres and pieces of wood still burning on the roadway. Protesters are still bringing more items to block access and literally adding more fuel to the fire. Some have even written on the road in chalk, warning people to get lost.

A truck was also forced to an indefinite standstill. Police say protesters climbed onto the vehicle and damaged it. Earlier on, police fired rubber bullets and deployed tear gas to disperse the protest.

Since then, discussions have apparently begun between the municipality and community representatives, amid a heavy police presence.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
