Scam vacancy advert does the rounds at hospital

We will never ask you to pay at any part of the job process. The fake advert illegally implicates the PRO of the hospital, who has no knowledge of this scam

Newcastle Provincial Hospital has issued a warning statement about a vacancy advert scam.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health (KZN DOH) has become the target of job scammers, with an alleged rip-off asking people to pay up to R2 500, to guarantee themselves a position at the hospital.

KZN DOH Communications Officer, Samkelisiwe Khumalo, said the hospital is currently not hiring.

“We will never ask you to pay at any part of the job process. The fake advert illegally implicates the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, who has no knowledge of this scam and has since registered a complaint with the police about this matter.”

Khumalo said some individuals have unfortunately fallen victim to the bogus job advert, and parted with their hard-earned money.

“The Department would like to reiterate, it would never request people submit any amount of money for any part of the job recruitment process.

“We are urging members of the public to remember that paying for a job constitutes fraud, and to familiarise themselves with the recruitment processes of the Department.

“The Department advertises its vacancies in reputable newspapers, the Department of Public Service and Administration’s (DPSA) website (dpsa.gov.za) and its website (kznhealth.gov.za), as well as occasionally on its Facebook page. Asking for money would be deemed bribery, which is illegal.”

Hospital Public Relations Officer, Sabelo Buthelezi, said he was surprised by the advert.

“Someone forwarded me the false advert asking if it was true the hospital is hiring. I was confused and that’s when I knew something was wrong.

“I went to the police station to report the matter and I would advise anyone else who has fallen into this trap, to please go to their nearest police station and open a case.

“As a hospital we cannot do anything, because we don’t know anything about open job vacancies.

“We also don’t advertise any vacancies for over a month, as that fake advert reflects that the application process is open for a month.”

The Department has emphasised it only accepts physical applications, not emails or faxes, and encourages the public to validate all adverts circulated on social media with the above mentioned sites, or to phone the Department and verify the authenticity of posts.
