Inspiring young leaders through debate

Learners from two schools tested their debating skills during an interactive and creative workshop

Mrs Gamede – founder of the Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change

Following the wrap-up of the 2019 SAIIA Young Leaders Conference, we, the educator delegates, decided to host a debate workshop for Riverdale Intermediate and Estcourt Secondary School.

Mrs Gamede from Riverdale Intermediate School; Noluthando Mbambo from Sithokozile Secondary School based in Durban-Pinetown at Kwadabeka C-Section; and Hector Nxumalo, who is the learner support agent at Sithokozile Secondary School, hosted this workshop.

Mr Nxumalo is also the founder of Inkabenhle Foundation, which is a creative art based foundation and partners with Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocate for Change, founded by Mrs Gamede.

“This area is full of useful resources that can be used by the organisations to create the future of this area’s youth and the learners who are still in schools in order to prevent them from getting involved in drugs and substance abuse. Most of the learners do not come from wealthy backgrounds and I hope to secure sponsors to provide school uniforms and food parcels for those who are in need. I hope to see learners’ talents shine,” explained Mr Nxumalo.

The trio are planning an art festival, the ‘Estcourt Art Festival’#EAT, which will be held in Estcourt in one of the community halls, whereby every member of the community will be given an opportunity to participate.

We urge the municipality of Estcourt and surrounding areas to help us in any way to fulfil this dream, which benefits the community.

We ask that the ward councillor lend us a hand in preparing for this event. We would like to thank the Riverdale principal for allowing us to pitch this workshop at the school. If you are interested in assisting or would like more information on the workshops, contact can be made via email to inkabenhlefoundation@gmail.com
