Clean-up and awareness campaigns launched

The local municipality says it aims to restore Estcourt to its former glory

Ratepayers heaved a huge sigh of relief when the local municipality recently announced its commitment to a clean-up campaign to be launched in all 23 wards.

Last week saw teams from Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs descend upon the streets of Estcourt; picking up rubbish and cleaning the pavements and gutters.

“The purpose of the initiative is to keep Estcourt clean, to promote a partnership in keeping our town clean, and to make our people proud of being citizens and residents of a clean town. We want to encourage communities, visitors and business people to join hands with the local municipality. If this is done, more investors will come into our town, leading to the creation of jobs,” commented Community Services Director Mrs ZM Ndlela.

Adding that the aim was to create a safe and clean environment, Mrs Ndlela said that the municipality would be embarking on various awareness campaigns to sensitise residents about a healthier environment.

“A plan has been drafted covering all areas under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. This comprises waste management awareness campaigns in schools in all wards, clean-up campaigns in four clusters, tariffs and bylaws awareness campaigns, tree felling and trimming, an illegal dumping eradication programme, fire breaks scheduled for all wards, and business compliance inspections. This a holistic approach in an attempt to revamp the town and take it back to its former glory,” said Mrs Ndlela.
