Boreholes to deal with water challenges in Ladysmith

Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko touched on the issue of tankers delivering water to communities at high costs, hence the reason to do away with hired trucks

uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko paid a visit to the Lusitania area recently to introduce a contractor who will be drilling boreholes in the area. Ward Cllr Nxumalo and Mayoral Office Manager L Mthonti accompanied the mayor, along with a team of officials.

The visit comes after an assessment was conducted in terms of the challenges this community faces in relation to water provision.

Addressing the community on these issues, Mayor Mazibuko told the audience that people are expecting water provision from uThukela at all costs, but that poor revenue collection negatively affects proper service delivery.

He also acknowledged that most people are unemployed, but at the same time there are those who are employed yet are not willing to pay. The mayor touched on the issue of tankers delivering water to communities at high costs, hence the reason to do away with hired trucks. Other means of providing water to communities – including springs, boreholes, hand pumps and piped water – are a lot cheaper in the long run.

Sydwalt Contractor, who will carry out the drilling of production boreholes, was then introduced to the community. According to Mr Zulu of the contract company, he will hear from the community where they want the boreholes to be drilled.
