Vryheid’s K9 Unit bites back at crime

"We are very proud of our teams. The guys work very hard and are very dedicated, and I am blessed to be part of this unit."

Fighting crime in recent weeks has kept the Vryheid K9 Unit extremely busy.

Unit Captain, Gary Stride smiled as he said: “It seems as though there is a competition brewing between the team members. It’s good to see them so motivated.”

On June 24, Sergeants M.Q. Nxumalo and M.P. Ndlovu, together with their dog Verna, arrested two suspects in the Sasko area, for the possession of an unlicensed firearm. It is believed the weapon had been stolen from a policeman the day before.

The K9 Unit trio was also responsible for the arrest of two suspects on June 25, in connection with a robbery and theft incident in Bhekuzulu earlier in the month. The following day, they arrested a suspect on Hlobane Street, for malicious damage to property.

More suspects were arrested by Sgts Nxumalo and Ndlovu, for offences ranging from the possession of marijuana to assault GBH, theft and breaking and entering. These crimes were committed in Bhekuzulu, Hlobane and Paulpietersburg.

On July 5, Sergeants T.P. Ndlovu, T.S. Nkosi and Constable B.B. Hlope were responsible for the arrest of two suspects, for the possession of counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R300 000. The forged goods included various types of shoes. The K9 Unit members followed up on some tip-off information, and pulled over the vehicle in which the fake footwear was being transported. These goods were subsequently confiscated.

Captain Stride was quick to add: “We are very proud of our teams. The guys work very hard and are very dedicated, and I am blessed to be part of this unit.”
