Freddie’s on a charity cycle mission

Social worker at the home, Susan Theunissen said it was a daily challenge for the home to provide this service, particularly as a non-profit organisation.

Freddie Oosthuizen is cycling more than 2 000 kilometres, to raise funds for charity.

Oosthuizen identified his beneficary as Home Meah Child and Youth Care Centre Newcastle, after the centre’s recently financial difficulties and its struggles to stay afloat.

Oosthuizen will cycle from Newcastle to Cape Town, going town to town to collect donations and sponsorship for the upkeep of the home.

Home Meah is registered with the Department of Social Development and in terms of the Children’s Act, provides temporary care for abandoned, neglected and abused babies.

It is currently the only registered baby home in the Amajuba District and houses 19 babies, the latest addition being an abandoned at just one month old.

Social worker at the home, Susan Theunissen said it was a daily challenge for the home to provide this service, particularly as a non-profit organisation.

“The home provides 24-hour care for the babies, which includes babies that are affected by HIV/AIDS. The subsidy from Government is limited, and therefore the home is dependent on the support of the community and its own fundraising activities to make ends meet.”

Oosthuizen plans to begin his charity cycle in October, with a target of raising R100 000 for the home.

“I’ve always wanted to support a charity and Home Meah desperately need the funds to take care of the babies,” he explained.

He aims to promote Home Meah throughout the country, by approaching businesses in the towns along his route and gaining their support.

The first step of his journey is acquiring a durable bicycle, which costs around R12 000.

“I want to make this fundraiser a success and I will go to any lengths, literally,” he concluded.

Be on the look out for Freddie and support him when you spot him passing through your town, and help contribute to a worthy cause.
