FPA urges all to ensure fire break burning is controlled

Fire breaks cannot be burnt after July 31, unless permission is granted

With the winter fire season underway in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, residents are urged to be fire smart.
Andre Adams, Manager of the Dundee Fire Protection Association (FPA), has urged Dundonians to adhere to strict regulations, particularly when fire breaks are burned.
Mr Adams said the rules were drawn by the FPA and the Department of Agriculture.
1) No burning on weekends (from 1pm on a Friday until 6am on a Monday morning)
2) No burning on public holidays
3) No burning if the Fire Danger Index (FDI) is higher than 60 (orange and red)
4) Burning when the FDI is 40 to 60 (yellow) must be done under the supervision of the Fire Cell Leader, who needs to grant permission to go-ahead
5) Before burning, notify your area Fire Cell Leader (an SMS is sufficient)
6) Notify your neighbours before burning (an SMS is sufficient)
7) An updated list of your firefighting equipment should be given to your area Fire Cell Leader, by June 1 every year
8) No burning after July 31, unless permission is granted
9) No burning out of grazing camps, until the designated time and date set by the FPA and Department of Agriculture (this will usually be set after the first good spring rains of at least 25mm). Regulations and FDI details can be obtained via the Internet, at www.kwanalu.co.za.
