Loskop-born Sama Luthuli, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and designer of Qhakaza Mshibe Africa Accessories, has had her pieces showcased at fashion shows in New York, where she now resides.

Sama Luthuli shows off a matching red neck- and wrist-piece.

Some unique and quirky designs have become associated with African jewellery, from the designs and the colour of the beads, to the type of material used to make the actual jewellery.

And this is exactly the style Sama brings out in her products. With bold colours, daring shapes and extra-large proportions, these designs guarantee an impact.

“I started my business in May 2018. I have been invited to many fairs and pop-up shops across the country,” shared Sama.

She says she derived her talent from both her grandmothers:

“Both my grandparents would make amancansi (grass mats) and one used to sew pillows. Handwork is a huge thing in my family and I am sure I got my talent from both my gogos.”

The biggest highlights so far for Qhakaza Mshibe Africa Accessories were when their work featured in the Danbury Fashion Show and the Diamond Fashion Show in 2018.

“The biggest fashion show we were honoured to be part of was in February this year, namely the Harlem Fashion Show,” told an excited Sama.

Fans can look forward to her latest collection exhibit at the Paris Fashion Show soon.

“Once you discover your talent, don’t wait for anybody to give you approval; just go with it. Learn about the fashion industry, and attend fashion workshops and fashion shows. Do everything with love and be you,” advised Sama to upcoming designers.
