Neglected sewer leak frustrates business owners

Despite numerous calls to the district municipality for intervention, business owners have to endure a foul-smelling sewer leak

Local businessman Shane Mothilal says he has tried just about everything to have a leaking sewer fixed – but got no joy.

A drain situated in the driveway behind Phillip Street will have just about anyone feeling sick to their stomach.
As if the foul smell is not enough, dirty water coupled with human faeces constantly overflows into Albert Street.

“I pay for these services but get no service. I need answers and an urgent time frame before I start losing customers,” he said.

Mr Mothilal shared that he has called Uthukela District Municipality countless times.

“I am tired of being shunted around from pillar to post. Each time I call, I am told to speak to someone else why can they not do their job?” he asked angrily.

In March 2017 the owner of JDR Metals said the service received from the municipality ‘stinks’. The pond of sewerage is filled with litter and muck creating a toxic environment, which these business people commute through daily.

“This is what my workers and I have had to put up with for the past few months on our way to work every single day. It is pathetic. How much more unpleasant must it be to for my clients, some who enter by foot. I have called the municipality, and uThukela thousand times, if not more and I still have to put up with this. I am fed up,” said the owner of JDR Metals with frustration.

The Uthukela District Municipality has not responded to the media enquiry sent from the Estcourt News regarding this issue.
