Mother, son shot dead in Wasbank

88-year-old woman and son gunned down in house

A brutal double murder of a mother and son in Wasbank has sparked a community outcry and a large police manhunt.

The bodies of Hawa Ismail (88) and her son, Naushad (49), were discovered on Saturday afternoon  in their home on Landman Street.

No one had seen the mother or son since Friday. Witnesses said those who went to check up on them on Saturday discovered that the burglar guards had been been forced open.

With suspicions aroused, entry was gained into the house where the two bodies were found. Both Hawa and Naushad had died from fatal bullet wounds, police said. It is thought that the Ismails were attacked in their house on Friday evening.

Many who spoke to the Courier voiced their ‘disgust over the nature of attack and the fact that an elderly, defenceless woman had been shot together with her son’.

It is not clear what the motive was for the vicious attack but neighbours are of the opinion that a motor vehicle had been stolen.

Police have launched a manhunt and anyone with information is asked to contact their nearest police station.
