Life behind the lens at local camera club

At the monthly meeting of the Newcastle Camera Club, members also have the opportunity to share their knowledge and direct photography-related questions to skilled and professional photographers.

Amateur photographer, Pierre Janse van Vuuren wants to capture moments so they last a lifetime.

A draughtsman by profession for the past 26 years, Pierre says his love of photography stems from that enjoyment – capturing any image in his everyday life and preserving it for years to come.

“Using photos to reflect what you see is fascinating to me. It’s an ever-changing industry and I enjoy discovering the development,” says Pierre.

He explains that with the amount of image editing software and constantly-developing camera technology, there is a world of opportunity for amateurs to make their mark.

“Photography is about knowing your equipment and how to use it; what to look for and what you want to attempt to capture and portray.”

Pierre believes photography is a skill everyone should learn, and for this reason, he encourages residents to join the Newcastle Camera Club and let their talents shine.

The club is a social gathering, currently led by specialist studio photographer, Nicki Proudfoot. “Nicki has a wealth of information about photography and shares it with the club,” says Pierre.

Club members meet once a month and share their favourite photographs, according to the theme for that particular month.

Members of the club then provide constructive criticism on the composition of the image, from lighting, exposure and angle to how the photographer can improve the quality of their photographs.

“The best three photos are then chosen. There are no prizes involved, just the appreciation of a well composed photo.”

Pierre says that in photography, gaining a different perspective can possibly change the dynamics of your next photograph.

“Photography is trial and error. You need to work with your camera, know the settings and physically practice taking random photos. Yes, there is a technical side, but once you are comfortable and confident, the world is your oyster.”

At the monthly meeting of the Newcastle Camera Club, members also have the opportunity to share their knowledge and direct photography-related questions to skilled and professional photographers.

Meetings take place at the Bergsig Church in Hutten Heights, entrance is free and participation is encouraged.
