UPDATEN11 crash death toll rises to 6

Just after 11am this morning, a taxi and a light motor vehicle collided on the N11 (Volksrust Road), just outside Charlestown.

When paramedics arrive at the scene, three people had already passed away.

“We attempted to resuscitate a fourth patient, who also later died on scene,” said Operations Manager for WATCO, Jan-Henk van Vuuren.

Three people were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

According to van Vuuren, a fifth person was transported to a nearby hospital but also passed away.

“Nine other passengers were injured,” he added.

Four other passengers were trapped and had to be freed from the wreckage with the Jaws of Life, by members of Newcastle Fire Services and the Volksrust Fire Department. The exact cause of the collision is at this stage unclear, and remains subject to official investigations.

The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to the family of the deceased.
