Municipality to increase security at Estcourt cemeteries after attack

A plan to cut the long grass and post a security guard has been devised

After being robbed and threatened at knife-point, an Estcourt father made an earnest plea to the local municipality to increase security and maintenance at the cemeteries in Estcourt.

The man, who did not want to be named, was attacked by a group of men at the graveyard at the corner of Alexandra and Keate streets recently. Cash and personal belongings were stolen while the man was forced to lie on the ground, with one knife to his head and another pressing against his neck.

The group of men fled, leaving the man badly shaken. Through an article in the Estcourt News, he appealed for the municipality and police to join hands and make an effort to increase security at Estcourt’s cemeteries.
His suggestions included cutting the grass and employing security guards.

The good news is that Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality has responded positively. Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize said on Monday that a programme has been “developed” to clear out any long grass.

“In terms of security, guards are now posted during the day,” added Mr Mkhize.

This comes as a relief to the man who was attacked.

“This is very good and I am thankful. These steps will improve security. I have visited the cemetery after the attack, but I go with three or four people so that if anything happens, we can fight back,” said the resident.

He also makes another suggestion to municipal management.

“Please cut the bush that is in Paradise. This is the place where the criminals are hiding when they rob and hijack people. The long grass makes it impossible for anyone to see if anyone or anything is concealed there,” he said.
